As I've stated before, I chose this internship in order to better understand what is necessary to thrive in a research laboratory and what medical field you would need to study in order to obtain a career in this setting. I've always held more of an interest in the anatomy of the body as a whole and their basic processes than in the biochemical reactions of a small and singular portion of the brain. Since this lab specifically focuses on the latter more, I have had a bit of difficulty focusing on certain assigned readings. One of my coworkers suggested that I take a basic anatomy class at a community college over the summer in order to have a better understanding of what I will be studying once I enroll in a university. This laboratory is located in UCSD, which is one of the universities that I will be applying to in the fall of 2015, and it has reassured me that I feel comfortable in this location and it has enough hands-on curriculum to keep me motivated. The undergraduates have told me that if I want to be admitted into UCSD that I maintain my grades and focus on my personal statement, they mentioned that while test scores may seem to be the most important, good grades and well-written personal statements speak much louder.
