Book Club
In this project we were given a list of books to choose from and read in a group. After each week we would write a letter concerning how we felt about reading, themes from the book, and the overall message the book sent. I chose a book called Little Bee that was written by Chris Cleave, it was about a 16 year old Nigerian girl who was released from a detention center in London. She had been caught escaping her country illegaly to run away from the Niger Delta oil conflict, but before she managed to escaping the men chasing after her and her sister they came across a white couple named Andrew and Sarah and they begged the couple for help. In the end Andrew refused to help them while Sarah did what she felt was right and gave the men what they wanted, a middle finger, but unfortunately that was only enough to save Little Bee and her sister was raped and killed. Two years later when Little Bee is released from the detention center without her papers she searches for that same couple and when she learns that Andrew committed suicide she decides to help take care of Sarah and their child, Charlie.
This is the first artifact I made, it was a poem about the character named Andrew and the internal struggle he faced when Little Bee called him two years after the beach incident. Originally I had drawn two hands holding each other at the bottom, one of them was missing a middle finger to represent Sarah and the other hand was Andrew's and on the sides I had drawn two nooses hanging to represent Andrew's death. I would have posted that version on here but it was lost so now I can only show you the poem. I'm proud of this artifact because I felt like I was able to add depth to a seemingly superficial character.
