Model United Nations
This project was made to teach us about the creation of the United Nations and what it stands for through a professional simulation of a United Nations committee meeting about overpopulation. We prepared by learning about World War I and II and the birth and death of the League of Nations and then the creation of the United Nations. World War I was caused by the growth of imperialism in Europe and the clash between the Great Powers (England, France, Germany, Russia), more specifically it was when Austria's archduke, Sir Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated by a Serbian named Gavrilo Princip and other countries came to defend the two countries' dispute. After this the League of Nations and the Treaty of Versailles were made, they both ended in failure and the start of World War II, soon after that the United Nations was founded. The United Nations' main goals are maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disasters, and armed conflict. The country I represented was Canada and I learned about its resources (oil, coal, petroleum, etc.), current population position (overpopulated), and stance on abortions (legal and included in family plans).
From this conference I mostly learned that each country arrives with their own solution specially suited to their country and during the meetings they talk to those with similar views on the topic to write a draft resolution together that would benefit everyone. The goal is to be willing to be flexible for each countries' beliefs and act like a desirable ally. I also learned that you have to really think about the decisions you make regarding other countries because certain things can change how you feel towards that country. I helped draft two resolutions one was concerning overpopulation being raised to the awareness of everyone and to make supplies for practicing safe sex available for everyone. The second one concerned the epidemic that broke out in the U.S. and how each country would contribute 10% of their profits or resources to fund an international research facility and when the cure is found it would be free for all. In the end my first resolution passed while the other only needed one more vote to pass.
This is my position paper written from the point of view of Canada in 2o50. It addressed the country's view on overpopulation and it's proposed solution. I even won the researcher's award for it.
